Walking Routes in Denmark

You might have heard of Hærvejen (The Military Road) which was created by traders, soldiers, cattlemen and pilgrims over the years. But have you ever set foot on it?

Give yourself the pleasure of a journey traversing thousands of years, where you can experience the presence of history: Burial mounds, sanctuaries, court buildings, gallows hills and old bridges.

Hærvejen covers the 260 km from Viborg to Kruså along the Jutland ridge and you will walk along a unique nature landscape created during the glacial period. Hilly scenery, dramatic cliffs, fertile forests and vast areas of flat heather moorland come together to create a fantastic nature experience where you can also enjoy the peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

Read more about Hærvejen, print your own map etc. on www.haervej.dk.

Give yourself a wonderful and exceptional experience - don your best shoes for a walk along the newly constructed nature trail, The Archipelago Trail, which circles the South Funen Archipelago.

You’ll have nature to yourself and plenty of space to enjoy the characteristic cultural landscape along the coast, through forests and in the open landscape.

The Archipelago Trail is divided into seven sections covering a total of 220 km. Maps and descriptions of the individual sections are available from the local tourist offices. The pamphlets also provide inspiration for one and multiday tours on the Archipelago Trails including information about local sights, accommodation, bus connections etc. You can also book all-inclusive walking tours.

The North Sea Trail is a fantastic walking path tracing historical steps through all the countries around the North Sea. The Danish part stretches 1,500 km.

In the northern part of Jutland, you can among other things experience Bulbjerg; Denmark’s only bird cliff or how the sea has eaten into the cliff walls below Mårup Church which has caused it to be relocated.

At the very top of Denmark is Skagens Gren (The Skagen Branch) where the two seas meet and further south, you find the Palm Beach near Frederikshavn which has real palm trees, Jernkilden (The Iron Spring) near Sæby, the nature reserve and culture information centre near Lille Vildmose, and the child-friendly swimming beach near Øster Hurup.

You can organise and create your own guide and find myths, stories and common traits of the cultural heritage of the North Sea region on www.northseatrail.org.
Experience Sjællandsleden - a new walking route with an old-fashioned name.
Led is an old Nordic name for a walking trail; and Sjællandsleden (The Zealand Led) stretches more than 600 kilometres passing through forests, fields and beaches on the islands of Zealand and Møn.

The route is divided into just under 60 sections with an extensive selection of experiences and accommodation along the way - perfect for a walking holiday. Sjællandsleden takes you past many exciting manor houses, burial mounds, wild plant and bird life and a rich wildlife.

You can order four maps covering different sections of the route. Sjællandsleden forms part of the 6000+ kilometre long North Sea Trail which extends through six different countries around the North Sea.
You can take as many detours and breaks as you want to on the Himmerland Trail since the 79 km long stretch between the towns of Viborg and Løgstør has 12 information boards that provide a multitude of useful tips on sights along the route.

The Himmerland Trail was created along the former railway track where the train between Viborg and Løgstør used to run. And now the route is a nature, walking and cycling path full of experiences.

You can visit a Danish vineyard near Ranum which makes use of Danish grapes, the herb garden by the beautiful Vitskøl monastery, and the Stone Age Centre at Ertebølle where you can try out some of the Stone Age tools. Read more about the route on www.visitvesthimmerland.dk
Experience the beautiful nature across Jutland from Denmark's westernmost point at Blåvands Huk to Vejle in the east.

On the nature trail along the Varde Å, Holme Å and Vejle Å streams, you get close to nature and far away from the traffic and stress of everyday life. The distance is about 120 km, but you can also choose to walk shorter stretches.

The views from the hills in Vejle Ådal (Vejle River Valley) are fantastic and you will see plenty of red deer in the dune plantations that have been established between the towns of Blåvand and Oksbøl.

However, most amazing of all are the ancient monuments that crop up on every section of the route: Burial mounds, runic stones and the most well-preserved Iron Age stronghold in Denmark, Troldborg Ring.

If you want to experience an incredibly beautiful part of Denmark, the Gendarm Path from the border town of Padborg to Høruphav on the island of Als is exactly what you are looking for.

The path is named after the guards who patrolled the border on foot between Denmark and Germany as it was established in connection with the re-unification in 1920, and the 74 km long route follows the varied coastline closely.

Along the way, you can board the small ferry to Okseøerne (The Ox Islands), take in the beautiful park at Gråsten Castle and let history unfold at Dybbøl Mill. You can also try to find the groove which Christian II allegedly made in the table top with his thumb during his imprisonment at Sønderborg Castle from 1532 to 1549.

Maps and route descriptions are available from the tourist offices in Aabenraa, Kruså and Sønderborg or at http://www.fjordregion.com/de/natur/gendarmenpfad.html
