Copenhagen and surroundings

Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, is often pointed out as one of the world's best, most lively and charming cities. It is a youthful - and yet historically old – city with all the offers you expect to find in a city, and on top of that, it has a number of green parks and breathing spaces, cosy canals and a modern harbour front.

West of Copenhagen is the large cathedral town of Roskilde and south of the city is Køge Bay - an area offering a beach park, exciting museum and the old market town of Køge.

CopenhagenCopenhagen has a convenient and easily accessible size and you get from one point to the other in the city centre quickly both on foot and by public transportation - and especially on a bike. Copenhagen is a very cycle-friendly city with cycle paths and a network of cycling routes crisscrossing the city. Free city bikes are parked in racks throughout the inner city, but you can also rent bikes.
Copenhagen - Kongens HaveCopenhagen's many green parks are lovely breathing spaces which are used frequently day and night. Also the line of lakes which traverses the city provide for popular oases.

In just 20 minutes you will be in Dyrehaven (the Deer Garden) north of Copenhagen. It is a well-visited excursion place with forests and large, open plains where large herds of deer graze.

Only a short bike or metro ride from the centre towards the east is the green nature area Amager Fælled (Amager Common) with hiking trails and cycle paths, many rare plants and birds and small herds of game.
Copenhagen - The Black DiamantCopenhagen's old harbour has gone trough an almost complete transformation over the past years. It is now a well-integrated part of the city and it is one of the most exciting areas with an interesting, new architecture - e.g. the Theatre, the Opera and the Black Diamond. On Islands Brygge, you find the popular harbour bath and close to this - and only a few metro stops from the city centre – is the new Amager Beach Park which is a two kilometre long artificial sand beach with lots of water sport activities on offer.
Copenhagen - ChristianshavnCopenhagen is a multifarious city and the city's quarters vary widely. Surrounding the inner city housing the medieval town are "the bridges". Vesterbro is the city's trendy quarter with lots of young and hip people and companies, Nørrebro is a colourful and multi ethnic quarter, Østerbro is where family life unfolds and there are many young, urban families here.

Christianshavn is the city's picturesque old canal town with picturesque 17th century houses and this is also where you find the Christiania Free Town with its alternative society. Valby and Frederiksberg are cities-in-the-city west of the city centre - in Valby, which housed the large Carlsberg Brewery until 2008, the years to come will see a new neighbourhood, Carlsberg.

Dragør on the south tip of Amager is an old skipper town with winding roads and fine, old houses that are often outfitted with imaginative towers and bay windows. And the old harbour is still lively. On the way there, you pass St. Magleby, where they still maintain the old Shrovetide traditions with horse riding.
There is plenty of excellent shopping in Copenhagen, a large selection of cosy and trendy cafes and a variety of fine restaurants. The Nordic kitchen is currently being revitalised and at the gourmet front, Copenhagen is the Scandinavian record-holder with 11 Michelin starred restaurants in 2008.
Copenhagen - Statens Museum for KunstThe Royal Theatre which is Denmark's national stage has three houses: The Old Stage (Gamle Scene) which primarily sees ballet, the Skuespilhuset (the Theatre house) and the Opera where they have opera and ballet. The city's other stages have a large and varied repertoire.

The museums have a lot on offer. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek e.g. has a unique selection of antique arts from the Mediterranean countries as well as French impressionists and Danish Golden Age art. Statens Museum for Kunst - the Danish national gallery features 700 years of important Danish and international works of art and at the National Museum you can experience Denmark's far and recent history.
København - TivoliThe Tivoli Gardens – Copenhagen's old entertainment gardens - is a magic and unique mixture of flowers, rides for children and adults, restaurants to suit every budget and lots of music – from rock on the lawn to jazz and classical concerts. Tivoli's Christmas fair is Northern Europe's largest.

Dyrehavsbakken - or Bakken as it is often known – is the oldest amusement park in the world. It is situated in Klampenborg north of Copenhagen and is a great mix of old-fashioned fun of the fair, plenty of rides and restaurants and bars.

København - ØresundsbroenApprox. half an hour from Copenhagen is the cathedral city of Roskilde. The Roskilde cathedral is the resting home of a large number of Danish royals and at the Viking Ship Museum you can experience five 1000 year old Viking ships which were found in Roskilde Fjord. In the museum harbour are 1:1 copies of the ships which you can try sailing.

In Køge Bay – the area south of Copenhagen – is the six kilometre long Ishøj Beach Park with white sand and high dunes. The exciting ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is built right next to the Beach Park and further to the south is the old harbour town Køge from which you can sail to Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. Køge's medieval town centre is well-preserved and many of the old houses and farms have been painted in beautiful colours.

The new Oresund Bridge has further connected the Oresund regions and shortened the journey time between Denmark and Sweden to only 10 minutes. Trains leave Copenhagen's city centre via the bridge with first stop in Malmö/ Sweden and by car, you enter the bridge in Kastrup and enter Sweden just south of Malmö.
