North Sealand

Throughout the green and fertile North Sealand, undulating open landscapes mix with impressive forests and large lakes. Along the north coast you find some of Sealand's most beautiful coastal stretches and best beaches for swimming, and along Oresund there are great views of the strait to Sweden.

To the west, the region is defined by Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord with soft fjord landscapes and low meadows.

North Sealand - Hornbæk KlitplantageAlong the Kattegat coast, there are many nice and child-friendly beaches with shallow waters. The widest beaches are found in Hornbæk, Tisvildeleje and Liseleje where the sand is fine and white and large sand dunes provide shelter from the wind, however Kattegat can bare its teeth when the wind blows onshore.

The Oresund coast is calmer and the beaches are small. Often wooden piers are provided during the summer period on the public beaches and they are available to everybody. At Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord, you also find a number of small and nice beaches with shallow waters, e.g. by Lynæs.
North Sealand - GribskovOn the north coast, the beaches mix with steep cliffs and slopes e.g. near Vejby and Gilbjerg Hoved - Sealand's northernmost point. From the Gilberg trail, which runs along the border of the cliff, there are beautiful views of Kattegat all the way to Sweden. Especially near Vejby Beach you get a great impression of nature's forces because here the sea eats into the coast fairly quickly - despite massive coastal protection.

Further inland from the coast's beaches and cliffs are large protected nature areas, e.g. Tisvilde Hegn with Troldeskoven (the Troll Forest), the beautiful heather covered Tibirke Bakker (Tibirke Hills) and Arresø, Denmark's largest lake.

North Sealand - Roskilde FjordGribskov is one of Denmark's largest forest areas and it has many lovely hiking trails for which there are great maps available. Along the eastern part of the forest lies Esrum Lake, which is Denmark's second biggest lake. There is for example a nice hiking trail that runs along the lakeshore from Nøddebo to Esrum with a view of the Lake to Fredensborg Castle.

On North Sealand's northwesternmost tip is the peninsula of Halsnæs surrounded by Kattegat, Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord. It offers amazing views of the land and waters, and during the summer season, a small ferry sails from Sølager to Kulhuse. From there it is only a short distance to Jægerspris Nordskov forest with old oak trees, some of which are up to 1000 years old.
North Sealand - HelsingørHelsingør (Elsinore) is situated at the entrance to Oresund and it is a traffic centre with ferries to Sweden. However, the town is first and foremost home to Kronborg Castle, the stage for Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Furthermore, there are many old half-timbered houses, cosy cobbled streets, a cathedral and a peaceful monastery in the busy town.

The town of Fredensborg is home to the royal family's spring and autumn residence, Fredensborg Castle. The large castle park has many paths and offers great views of Esrum Lake.

North Sealand - Frederiksborg Slot, HillerødThe symbol of Hillerød is the large Frederiksborg Castle, home to the Danish Natural History Museum which among other things houses a portrait gallery. The castle was a royal castle for many years and it has easy access to the large hunting forests surrounding Hillerød town.

On North Sealand's coast there is a plethora of beach towns, e.g. Hornbæk, Gilleleje, Rågeleje, Tisvilde and Liseleje. Several of them used to be small fishing villages, e.g. Hornbæk, which is today viewed as the most exclusive of all the beach towns, whereas Gilleleje still has a functioning fishing harbour. From here and in many other coastal towns along Oresund and Kattegat, the fishermen helped many Danish Jews to safety in Sweden during WW II. However, in Gilleleje it went wrong in October 1943 when 75 Jews who were hidden at the church's attic were informed on and captured. You can get more information about this at Gilleleje Museum.

In Hundested, the small fishing village has developed into a busy fishing harbour. At Skansen above the city, is the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen's house, and north of Hundested, you find Kikhavn which is one of the region's oldest fishing villages. Today, the fishing village with the many thatched houses is listed.

Between Roskilde Fjord and Arresø lake is the old industrial town Frederiksværk where a canon foundry and a gun powder factory form part of the Frederiksværk Industrial Museum. Frederikssund faces the fjord and is home to the painter J. F. Willumsen's Museum. At a headland in the fjord, you can experience ferocious Viking plays during the summer months as well as visit a Viking village.
North SealandNorth Sealand has a large number of golf courses and most of them welcome non-members.
At Gilbjerg Hoved on the north coast there are great possibilities for hang gliding and windsurfers can e.g. seek challenges at Lynæs.

North Sealand - Louisiana, HumlebækNorth Sealand has always had an important role in Danish history, and for centuries it was the kings' preferred playground. The many castles can testify to that. Kronborg Castle, Frederiksborg Castle and Fredensborg Castle are the most famous, but also Jægerspris Castle and Selsø Castle are worth a visit.

Also artists and writers were attracted to the area's nature and there are many exciting museums in the region. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk is Denmark's most visited museum with Danish and international art and frequent special exhibitions. Close to this is Nivaagaard Painting collection with older works of art and in Rungsted, you find the Karen Blixen Museum which is a copy of the writer's home on Rungstedlund where she wrote her famous stories such as "Out of Africa".

North Sealand - Esrom KlosterDuring medieval times, Esrum Monastery was one of the biggest in Denmark. Today, only one single building is left with the old Esrum Møllegård. Exciting exhibitions portray life in a monastery at the time, and during the month of June you can visit a great medieval market by the monastery.
