General rules pertaining to cars All vehicles approved/registered in the home country can be brought into Denmark during travels. A number plate and a nationality sticker are compulsory.
Driving licences: A valid official driving licence in Roman letters or an international driving licence is mandatory for all registered vehicles.
Allowed size of vehicles: The maximum sizes for motor vehicles are: Width 2.55 m, height 4 m, length 12 m The maximum length for motor vehicle with trailer/caravans is set at 18.5 m. The maximum length for busses is set at 15.00 m. (articulated busses: max. 18.75 m.).
Application: Transport vehicles that have temporarily been brought into the country may not be lent to persons resident in Denmark or used for transport in Denmark against payment. Breach of this rule will incur a fine and a possible charge of import and registration fees.
Insurance: All foreign motor vehicles and accompanying trailers and caravans must provide proof of third party cover. The insurance requirement is automatically considered fulfilled for vehicles from EU countries, as well as from the Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Iceland and Croatia. For vehicles registered in other countries, the driver is required to have a valid green international green insurance card or a border insurance cover issued by the Danish Motor Insurers' Bureau.
Green card: A green card is not required on entry from: EU countries as well as Iceland, Croatia, Andorra, Norway and Switzerland. A green card is required on entry from: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Israel, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. On entry from other countries, a temporary third party cover must be issued at the border. Price per passenger car: DKK 750,- for the first month - DKK 450,- for the following months. The insurance covers driving in Denmark and other EU and EEA countries as well as Switzerland.
For caravans, it must be apparent from the insurance documents for the towing vehicle that the insurance also covers the caravan.
Safety equipment: The use of fitted seat belts is compulsory. Children between the ages of 3 and 6, both included, may use a children's car seat instead of a seat belt. Children under the age of 3 must be secured in an approved child's car seat or other approved safety equipment fitted to the child's height and weight. Where the car is not fitted with seat belts at the back seats, the child may use the back seat without being secured by special safety equipment.
The use of lights (dipped headlights, daytime running lights or fog lights) is compulsory at all hours.
A warning triangle is compulsory.
The use of hand-held mobile phones while driving is prohibited.
Motorcycles/mopeds: An approved crash helmet is compulsory. Motorcycles may have a sidecar/ tow a trailer. Mopeds must not tow a trailer.
Winter/studded tyres are NOT compulsory in Denmark. Where studded tyres are fitted, they are only permitted during the period from 1 November to 15 April and only if all the tyres on the vehicle are studded.
