Where does the largest 4th of July celebration outside of the US take place? In Denmark! Each year, thousands of people gather in Rebild Bakker - a hilly national park south of Aalborg in Jutland - to celebrate USA's Independence Day, meet other Danish-Americans, and remember those who left Denmark to seek a new life in America.

Rebild Bakker is a 190 acre national park, donated by Danish-Americans to the Danish government. The idea to use a piece of Danish heather-covered rolling hill landscape as a gathering place for Danish-Americans to meet each year with family, friends, and acquaintances in their own country originated with Danish-American Max Henius.
The first Rebild 4ht of July Celebrations took place in 1912. At Rebild, Danes and Americans come together for the outdoor celebration, which is filled with bands, singing and fireworks. American keynote speakers in past years have included former presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. The celebration is estimated to be the largest 4ht of July celebration outside of the US.

Not far away, in the festive city of Aalborg, there is an extensive program of events, lasting several days, including concerts, exhibitions, conducted tours and other events of special interest to American visitors.  Not visiting Denmark on the 4th of July? Don't worry - you can visit the park and learn more about Danish immigration to the US on another day. Among the attractions is the Lincoln Log Cabin. The Lincoln Log Cabin museum was opened in July 1995 after a fire in 1993. The museum tells the story of the Danish immigrants as well as the Indians, the Wild West and the American pioneer settlements. You'll also find a visitor center with an exhibition outlining the reason why the the Forth of July is celebrated in Rebild.
